EAST LONGMEADOW, MA - John Frederick Emerson, 60, died unexpectedly at home. He had been an attorney until the mid 1990's when he turned his attention to developing a philosophical treatise and several novels (unfinished). He was the father and "Bud" to son James, with whom he thoroughly enjoyed "playing the picks" each football season and with whom he experienced many adventures in Japan, where James now lives. He was the father and chief advisor to daughter Sarah whom he proudly encouraged to become a leader in student government, a strong athlete and an engaging, fearless woman. John was the doting grandfather of Alex, 7 and Jacqueline, 5, who live in Tokyo. He made many trips there to be with them and help get them started on a great path. For 35 years, he was married to Frances Emerson, a business executive now living in Iowa. He helped to challenge her and often provided her with insights. John was the only son of Franc, who predeceased him and his mother, Evelyn (Wagner) Spilsbury of St. Anne, Ill. He is the brother of Reverend Lori Schroeder also of St. Anne, Ill and Nancy of the greater Chicago area. He will be best remembered for his searing intelligence, raucous (if sometimes politically incorrect) sense of humor and firm belief in both the dignity and accountability of mankind. A visiting hour will be held on Saturday from 10-11 AM in the Forastiere Smith Funeral Home, 220 N. Main St. East Longmeadow, MA followed by burial in Billings Hill Cemetery, Prospect St, East Longmeadow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Carlson Recovery Center, 471 Chestnut St. Springfield, MA 01199.
