Daughter of Noah W. and Francis Jane McCauley Fleming.
"widow of the late Edward M. Emerson, 78 years of age, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. R. Sanders in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Tuesday, Feb. 18 after several months of illness. The subject of this notice was paralyzed January 1 & has been in a coma since that date. She was visited by her daughter, Mrs. T. C. Brown & Mrs. R. L. Coates of Luray for several weeks immediately after being stricken. Another daughter Mrs. Keller Ambrose of Woodstock who went to North Carolina about one week ago, was with her mother when she died. Mrs. Emerson who was the daughter of the late Noah Fleming of near Luray, had been a resident of this section nearly all her life but was a native of Shenandoah County. She joined the Methodist Church about 50 years ago & attended services whenever her health permitted. Her husband died about 8 years ago. He was an employee of the Deford Tannery of this place. Many years ago while employed by this company he in some manner swallowed a brass rivet for which he had taken numerous hospital treatments. A short time prior to his death during a coughing attack the rivet was ejected. Very shortly thereafter he died & it is supposed from poisoning from the rivet. Mrs. Emerson had spent the past several winters with her daughter, Mrs. Sanders in Rocky Mount having gone there the last time during the earl Autumn. Mrs. Emerson is survived by the following children: Mrs. W. R. (Bertha) Sanders of Rocky Mount, Mrs. T. C. (Ruth) Brown of Luray, Noah Emerson of Luray, Tom Emerson of Chambersburg, Pa., Mrs. Keller (Lottie) Ambrose of Woodstock, Mrs. R. I. (Beatrice) Coates of Luray & Milton Emerson of Luray. Two children died in infancy. The funeral was conducted from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Brown on Thursday at 2 p. m. by her pastor the Rev. W. D. Luttrell of the Luray Methodist Church. Burial took place in Green Hill Cemetery. All of her children attended the funeral. Charles Fleming, a nephew, of Covington, was also present."
