ELLSWORTH, DOROTHY WASSUM Passed away at the age of 98 on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. Born in Ponca, Nebraska July 17, 1908, daughter of Sylvester A. and Fredericka Wisslicen Wassum, she was raised in Tekamah, NE, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Music Education degree, and Northwestern University with a Master of Music degree. Subsequently she taught vocal and instrumental music in Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana and Colorado, as well as summer sessions in choral technique and literature at Northwestern University. While she was choral director at South High in Denver her choirs won accolades with national radio broadcasts and performances and she received recognition as a widely sought choral clinician. After a year as General Supervisor of Music in the Denver public school district she married Dr. Allen Eugene Ellsworth, now retired Chairman of the Department of Music Theory at S.M.U. and Minister of Music first at East Dallas Christian Church and later Midway Hills Christian Church. During those years Dorothy transformed her professional career into a life of service by tirelessly working by her husbands side in music, worship, artistic planning, and directing youth choirs in the church, all the while raising her stepdaughter. After growing up in the Lutheran Church, she became a committed member of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, and was a founder and for two years national president of the Association of Disciples Musicians. Dorothy was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon music honorary society and was for 66 years a member of the P.E.O Sisterhood, being past president of Chapter BC, Dallas. Even after retirement from active teaching she maintained her zeal for education through active involvement with the Dallas ISD School Board. Dorothys immediate survivors include: her husband, A.E. Ellsworth; daughter Kathryn E. Johnson and husband Karrell J. Johnson; granddaughters Brenda C. Johnson and Donna J. Bailey and husband, Clayton Lee Bailey; and a niece, Ricky Kurz Stapp of Denver. Services will be held Friday, Oct. 20, graveside at 9:30 a.m., Restland Cemetary, and in celebration of Dorothys life at 11:00, Midway Hills Christian Church, 11001 Midway Rd., Dallas.
