Mrs. Edith Ellison Cameron, 94, of Alexander City, AL, passed away May 15, 2008 at her home. Funeral services were held 11 AM Saturday, May 17, 2008 at First united methodist Church. The Rev. Audie Hodges and Rev. Ron Gonia officiated. Burial followed at Alexander City Cemetery. Visitation were held from 10 AM until the time of service at the church, according to Radney's Funeral Home, Alexander City, AL. Mrs. Cameron was born January 16, 1914 in Hurtsboro, AL to the late Joseph Adger and Elvie Mitchell Ellison. After her graduation from Russell County High School in Hurtsboro, she attended Huntingdon College where she graduated Cum Laude in 1935. During the next few years, she taught school in Eclectic and Roanoke. She met Dr. James E. Cameron, her husband-to-be, in Eclectic and they were married on August 1, 1939 in Hurtsboro. By the time of their marriage, Dr. Cameron had moved to Alexander City where he and Mrs. Cameron remained for the rest of their lives. She had been an active member of the Tuesday Study Club since 1939 and she served this club in almost every office. Mrs. Cameron was active in the local PTA and Camp Fire Girls when her children were in school. During World War II, she was a member of Red Cross Motor Corp. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she was also very active for many years in the United Methodist Women and served three terms as president of this group. She was a former member of the Seekers Bible study group. In 1955, she was selected to Alexander City's First Lady. Among her hobbies were golf, reading, bridge and travel with her husband and children. She was a very loving and well-loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Dr. James Edwards Cameron; two daughters, Elizabeth Cameron and Elaine Cameron Carlisle; one son, James Edwards Cameron, Jr.; son-in-law, Warren David Carlisle; and two brothers, Herman Theodore Ellison and Ira Frank Ellison. Survivors include two daughters, Edith Cameron Blankenship (Freddie) and Eleanor Cameron Carlisle; a daughter-in-law, Scooter Quick Copeland (Charles); a son-in-law, James Chapman Carlisle (Sarah), all of Alexander City, AL; five grandsons, Joseph Cameron Blankenship of Alexander City, AL, Warren David Carlisle, Jr. (Jennifer) of Pinson, AL, Martin Luther Blankenship (Gayla) of Birmingham, AL, David Steven Blankenship (Mary Jane) of Greensboro, AL and Alfred Marion of Blankenship (Michelle) of Sanford, FL; five granddaughters, Elaine Mayfield Gwaltney (Gene), Ellison Mayfield Holley (Randy) of Alexander City, AL, Cameron Carlisle McDaniel (Patrick), also of Alexander City, AL, Ashley Cameron White (John) of Mobile, AL and Angela Catherine Cameron of Birmingham, AL; eighteen great grandchildren and one nephew, Herman Theodore Ellison.
