Irvin Ellison, beloved father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2008. Irvin will always be remembered for his sweet, giving spirit and love for his Lord, his family and his country.
Born in Kirkwood, DE to Irvin G. Ellison, Sr. and Marion (Boulden) Ellison, Irvin served in the Army on Guadalcanal and other islands in the South Pacific with 35 months in combat during WWII, receiving the Bronze Service Star. After his military service, he worked for the US Postal Service retiring in 1987. After retirement, he then drove a senior citizen bus for New Castle County until 2000 "to help the old people". He was a member of New Castle United Methodist Church, Post 2863 VFW, New Castle Hundred Lions Club and New Castle Senior Center. Irvin enjoyed gardening, tinkering on anything mechanical, and spending time with his family at the beach.
Irvin is survived by 1 brother, John "Jack" H. Tobin, of Newport, DE; 2 sons, John Ellison of West Bloomfield, MI and Griff Ellison of Pennsville, NJ; 1 step-son, Ralph Maglio of Wall, NJ; and 1 step-daughter, Mary Lou Maglio of St. Peters, MO. He also leaves behind his much loved grandchildren, Robyn Ellison, Jason Ellison, Daniel Ellison, Gerard Maglio, and Ken Maglio; and 2 great-grandchilden, Logan Ellison and Sophia Maglio. Irvin was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie (Toppin) Ellison and his second wife, Mafalda (Zoppi) Ellison; 2 brothers, John G. Ellison and James C. Ellison, and a sister, Elizabeth Deakyne.
Family and friends are invited to attend Irvin's viewing on Sunday, July 27, from 7-9 pm at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware St, New Castle and again on Monday, July 28, from 10-11 am at New Castle United Methodist Church, 510 Delaware St, New Castle, DE 19720. Services will follow at 11 am on Monday, July 28, at New Castle United Methodist Church followed by internment at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts be given to the New Castle United Methodist Church.
