Mrs. Mattie Louise Ellis Chavis, age 76, died on Friday July 1, 2011 at the Effingham County Hospital. She was born in Brooklet, GA on March 18, 1935, to the late Lonnie and Ettie Lott Ellis. She was a graduate of Savannah High School and Armstrong State College. She spent many years caring for others as a nurse at Candler and Memorial Hospitals of Savannah where she retired.
She enjoyed years of dedicated service as a leader in The Boy Scouts of America troop of Rincon, GA. Her favorite times were spent camping, arts and crafts creations, viewing baseball, and gathering with family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a Christian.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years Eugene L. Chavis of Guyton, GA; a daughter Susan Chavis Tarrant of Guyton, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law Larry L. (Deidra) Chavis of Bluffton, SC and Dwayne E. (Mary) Chavis of Eustis, FL; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
A graveside funeral and burial will be on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery with Elder Steve Taylor officiating.
