1910 Russell is living with his mother in a boarding house and working at a publishing house as an office boy. His brother Mervyn was living with their grandparents in Sonoma. Their father was bouncing from job to job and appears to not have been part of the family life. In 1917 Russell registered for the WWI draft, at that time he was a salesman for Standard Oil Company in San Francisco.
