He died Dec. 22, 1890 on his farm in Maple Grove Twp., Barron Co., Wis., aged 62 years, 5 months, and 3 days and was buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Chetek. His military style gravestone is inscribed "Capt. J.R. Ellis Co. K. 36 Wis. Inf." He had been an invalid for many years, and was confined to a wheel chair in later years.

She was born March 2, 1829, in Middlesex, Vermont, and passed away November 6, 1893 in Chetek, and was buried beside her husband in Lakeview Cemetery. Their children were: Flara Ann, b. 24 Jan 1851; Adney, b. 25 Sep 1852; Clara, b. 27 Apr 1854; Elizabeth, b. 1 Mar 1856, in Wis.
