New York, USA

Mary Jane Elliott married Samuel Bullock when she was only 15 years old. An invalid mother [Ruth Peck Elliot Bullock, whose second marriage was to Levi Bullock, the father of Samuel Bullock] deprived her of any education. But she was gifted with a strong active mind and a will power that overcame her handicap. Her log cabin home in Johnstown, Rock County, Wisconsin, was neat, and hospitality reigned there.
A January 1922 edition of the Janesville (Rock County, Wisconsin) Gazette carried the following obituary for Mary Jane Elliott Bullock:
Whitewater.-- Mrs. Mary Jane Bullock, 86, one of the earliest pioneer settlers of Rock County, died here at 4 a.m., Monday [23 January 1922]. Mrs. Bullock, the widow of Samuel Bullock, came to Johnstown township from New York state 70 years ago [in about 1850], and lived with her husband on a farm in that township until they retired and moved to Whitewater 17 years ago [in about 1905], where she has since lived.
Mary Jane Elliott was born in Erie County, New York, October 6, 1835, and was married when 16 years of age to Samuel Bullock [in 1851]. He preceded her in death six years ago [in 1916] after they had enjoyed 65 years of married life.
Mrs. Bullock is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. L. Janes, Whitewater, and Mrs. Fred R. Bloodgood, wife of a state prohibition agent, Whitewater. Mr. Janes was a relative of the man for whom the city of Janesville is named. Seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday [25 January 1922] at the Methodist church, Rev. Allan Adams officiating. Interment will be in the North Johnstown cemetery.
