Kittie Christiana Ellington was born in Clayton, Johnston County, NC, the eldest of 5 known surviving children (3 boys/2 girls) born to Sheriff Jesse Thomas Ellington and his (1st) wife, Delia Smith. Her father was a highly respected and well-known citizen of Clayton, a CSA veteran, merchant, farmer, and Sheriff. J. T. Ellington would would marry three times, having 9 children by two of his wives. Kittie was his first born.
The Ellington family has long roots in Johnston County, with their ancestor John Ellington, Jr. arriving from Prince George County, VA around 1720; and the family early on settling around Clayton.
Kittie was just 18 when she married the well-respected 28-year old Prof. Exum G. Beckwith, principal of Clayton Academy (later Clayton High School) on July 11,1888. The couple would be parents to one known child, Kittie Exum Beckwith (Feb 1890-May 1890), who died in infancy.
Kittie Ellington Beckwith died soon after the birth of her only child (who died about the same time). Remembered as beautiful and accomplished, the young bride died within a year of her marriage. Her husband would survive just 3 more years, passing at the age of 32 while heading the Mathematics department at Wake Forest College, Wake Co, NC.
The young couple are buried next to each other in the Ellington plot of Clayton City Cemetery.
