Bill Eldred, 83, of El Centro passed away the morning of March 31, 2013 while taking his morning walk near his home.

Bill was born in Hickory, Okla. on March 27, 1930 to Don and Tennie Beatrice Freeman Eldred. He was a longtime resident of El Centro, having moved here at the age of 10 he attended elementary schools in Imperial and El Centro, graduating from Central Union High School, class of 48', he then attended Imperial Valley College. He excelled in track events, winning numerous awards.

At the age of 17, Bill started working for the IID as a surveyor during the summer and had joined the National Guard before he was drafted into the Army in 1950. He was deployed to Korea where he served with the Korean Military Advisory Group as an engineer. His proudest memory during this time was helping build an orphanage in Kunhae, Korea.

Discharged in 1954, he returned to the Imperial Valley and continued agricultural surveying with the IID and Golden Surveyors till he began his own company, Eldred Surveying. He surveyed in the Imperial Valley and surrounding areas for 50 years.

He enjoyed water skiing, gardening, farming, raising his turtles, hunting, fishing and trips to Mexico for deep sea fishing. He's well remembered as one of the best pool players in the valley. He was a member of the I.V. Sunrunners Car Club and enjoyed his classic Ford cars. He was also an active member with the local American Legion, Eagles, Elks and Moose Lodge. He loved his little dog "Boy" and walked him every morning, with his determination to stay active. It was during his walk with "Boy" on the morning of March 31, 2013 he was called home.

Bill is truly missed and loved by his family and friends. He will forever live in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his son, Kenny Eldred; parents, Don and Tennie Eldred; and sister, Betty Pollard.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; step-children, Judy (Kelly) Fortenberry, Donald (Leslie) Piper, Janet Piper; sister, Donna Wilson; brother-in-law, Jim Pollard; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary in Brawley. Service will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Frye Chapel and Mortuary. Burial will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery.
