Charles and both his parents were born in Nova Scotia Canada. He and his wife Juliana were blessed with six known children of the 1880 U.S. Census, all having been born in Illinois. At the time of the census, they were operating a farm in Glenco, Trego County, Kansas. That next year, they moved to Butte, Montana and began a Real Estate business. Children at that time were Minnetta (1864), Fred (1866), Edward D (1868), Charles Jr. (1871), and twin son and daughter Milan D. and Emma E. (1874).
