Botts, Frances Elam, 89, of Big Stone Gap, VA, passed away on Wednesday (June 1, 2011) at Norton Community Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on October 11, 1921 in Ripley, TN and raised in Jackson, TN. Mrs. Botts graduated from Union University in Jackson, TN with a degree in Home Economics. She taught at Union University, Arkansas State College, and the University of Tennessee. She later received a masters degree from the University of Tennessee.
After moving to Big Stone Gap with her husband, she taught at East Stone Gap High School and continued teaching at Powell Valley High School after consolidation and before her retirement.
Mrs. Botts was a member of First Baptist Church in Big Stone Gap and active in the Ladies Circle. She was also a Chi Omega Sorority Sister and a volunteer with the Lonesome Pine Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Buell M. And Kate (Klutts) Elam; and one brother, Robert Elam.
Surviving are her husband of 63 years, Dr. Stanley Horton Botts, Sr.; two sons, Dr. Stanley Horton Botts, Jr. and Robbin Arnold, and Dr. Robert Elam Botts and Diane Kelley Botts; grandchildren, Robert Andrew Botts, Katie Susanna Botts, and James Hunter Botts; several nieces and a nephew.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until 12 Noon on Saturday at Holding Funeral Home (17 E. 3rd St., N.) in Big Stone Gap, VA.
The funeral service will follow at 12 Noon on Saturday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Ken LaDuke, Rev. Ronnie Mutter, and Rev. Jeff Sams officiating.
Interment will follow in Glencoe Cemetery.
The pallbearers will be: Andrew Botts, Hunter Botts, Nick Botts, Bruce Large, J. Fred Tate, Charles Metcalf, and Don Ferrell.
