Alice Elaine Gavagan Eichorn
Mrs. Eichorn, 85, of Charlotte passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center, Pineville. Born in Boston, MA on August 7, 1925, Elaine was the daughter of the late Frank Gavagan and Catharine Murphy Gavagan. She was a graduate of Medford High School and her beloved Middlebury College where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She often reminisced about her happy college days, ski trips in Canada, and the many friends with whom she kept in touch.
Following a brief teaching career, Elaine married the love of her life, John V. Eichorn, on June 9, 1951. They grew up in the same neighborhood in West Medford, MA. John's chemical business brought Elaine and John to Charlotte in 1957, with their two young daughters. Four more children were born in Charlotte. Elaine was a devoted mother and homemaker for her husband and their six children. Watching her children participate in many sporting events at Charlotte Catholic High School was a joy for Elaine. She and John had a circle of faithful friends with whom they enjoyed many wonderful events and occasions.
A devout life-long Catholic, Elaine and her husband were founding members of St. Gabriel Catholic Church where she remained a member attending daily Mass for as long as she was able.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband who passed away on March 21, 1981 and by an infant son on December 8, 1955. Survivors include her four daughters, Karen Sullivan and husband, Bill, of Charlotte; Gail Kroeger of Naperville, Illinois; Mary Christine Dorociak and husband, Jim, also of Naperville, Illinois; Martha Sallmann and husband, Mark, of St. Charles, Illinois. She is also survived by her two sons, Kevin Eichorn and his wife, Geralyn, of Charlotte; Gary Eichorn, also of Charlotte. Elaine is also survived by 11 grandchildren.
The family sincerely appreciates their thoughtful attention and wishes to thank the caring staff of the Regency Retirement Village where Elaine was a resident for the last 15 months of her life.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated to honor Elaine's life at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 21, 2011 at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Road. Interment will be at the Belmont Abbey Cemetery.
