Joan Brixius - April 30, 2012

Joan Brixius was born on Oct. 18, 1932 at Ogallala, Neb. to Hans and Amelia Turtscher Eichner. She grew up on her parents' dairy farm southeast of Ogallala where she helped with the farming. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She attended St. Paul's Lutheran School through the eighth grade and finished her schooling at Ogallala High School. She worked for Goodall's after graduation.
Joan was married to Richard Brixius of Grant, Neb. on January 12, 1955. Richard joined the military and Joan stayed with her parents until she joined him at Ft. Devens, Mass. where their daughter, Deborah, was born. Richard was sent to Germany and the family joined him there. Their son, Steven,was born in Germany.
After his discharge, they eventually settled in Grant where Joan worked for the Perkins County Community Hospital. She started in the laundry division and eventually moved into housekeeping. She worked at the hospital for 28 years. In addition to her work, she helped take care of her father in Ogallala after her mother died in 1971.
Joan was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and with much support from her friends and family she fought a courageous fight and died peacefully at her home in Grant on Monday afternoon, April 30, 2012. She had reached the age of 79.
Joan was an active member of the Grant Zion Lutheran Church and the Zion Ladies Aid. She was in charge of the church library and volunteered at the nursing home calling bingo and assisting Zion Lutheran when they were in charge of the chapel services. She also assisted Jo McCormick with nursing home activities for a couple of years.
Joan enjoyed sewing days with ladies from the church, her Monday Bible study at the Swan residence, and could always be seen on her daily walks around Grant with her husband.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elaine Wentz, and a niece, Brenda Eichner.
Joan is survived by her husband, Richard; one daughter, Deb Brixius of Crete, Neb. and one son, Steve of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one grandson, Tyler and one granddaughter, Shandra and husband Alex Hage and their daughter, Avery, all of Colorado Springs; her brother, Bob and wife Sandie Eichner of Denver; three brothers-in-law, Danny Brixius of Ft. Collins, Colo., Larry and wife Connie Brixius of Milliken, Colo., and Charles Brixius of Billings, Mont.; several nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3 (today) at 10:30 a.m. at the Grant Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Ron Krause officiating.
Burial will be in the Grant
Fairview Cemetery.
