Alma Ryan Eglin, a co-founder of Ocean Springs' first carnival organization and a former longtime downtown merchant, died Wednesday at Biloxi Regional Medical Center. She was 88.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Saturday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in Crestlawn Cemetery.
For more than a quarter of a century, she and her husband, Don Y. Eglin, operated Eglin's Grocery and Market on Washington Avenue in the building that now houses Art Who? gallery and inn. She helped found the Merry Makers, the city's first carnival krewe. She and her husband later served as the krewe's king and queen. She also started the Ocean Springs Duplicate Bridge Club, served as president and remained a member the rest of her life. For two terms, she was president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Ocean Springs.
In addition to her social activities, she was also a civic leader. She served as president of the Ocean Springs PTA for two terms. She was president of the Villa Maria Council.
A lifelong resident of Ocean Springs, she was born July 23, 1910. At the age of 48, she attended Sacred Heart Academy night school, where she earned a degree in business administration. At the age of 58, she received a nursing degree.
Visitation will be at the church 1 1/2 hours prior to service. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include three daughters, Bettie Fallo and Peggy Vaughn, both of Ocean Springs; Donna Burch of Biloxi; a sister, Oral Mae Senseney of Ocean Springs; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
