Born in Hannoversch-Muenden, Germany, Eggeling settled in Richmond, Virginia, where he became a respected horticulturalist and gardener. After becoming President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis appointed Eggeling as the Confederate White House's official gardener and housekeeper. He later became White House Steward and President Davis' personal secretary and was in charge of all White House staff and activities. After the war, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri and became the General Superintendent of St. Louis City Parks and Gardens. (Information provided by Mr. John Maurath, Missouri Civil War Museum)
