CHAMPAGNE Lorraine Edwards Gazave Champagne on Sunday, August 21, 2011, at 2:40PM. Age 90 years and one day. Preceded in death by her parents Amelie Eugenie Albert and Hero Joseph Edwards, Sr.; her first husband Gustave Albert Gazave, Jr.; her daughter Carol Ann Gazave; her second husband Leo Pierre Champagne, Sr.; and her younger brother Hero Joseph Edwards, Jr. Survived by her sister, Camille Edwards Guarisco; children David Edwards Gazave (Adriana), Jonathan Charles Gazave (Gloria), Leo Pierre Champagne, Jr. (Cheryl), Jean M Champagne (Betty), Marie Therese Champagne, and Michel Joseph Champagne (Madeline); grandchildren Joshua David Gazave (Rachel), Sarah Ann Gazave, Cristelle Sumiko Gazave, Walter Louis Gazave, Catherine Therese Gazave, Clairemarie Frances Gazave, Clementine Elizabeth Gazave, Charlotte Noelle Gazave, Benedict Michael Gazave, Daniel Henry Champagne, Elizabeth Riecke "Betsy" Champagne, Katherine Lucille "Kate" Champagne Englehardt (Mark), Thomas Hamer Wingo III (Ashley), Sarah Elizabeth Wingo, Lauren Marie Wingo Jackson (Jason), Philip Allen Champagne, and Kevin William Bumgarner (Meghan); great-grandchildren Zoey Lauren Gazave, Monet Marie Champagne, and Lillie Bernadette Bumgarner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A member of The Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans by descent from Pierre Olivier deVezin. A graduate of Eleanor McMain High School and Allen Business College, former personal secretary to Rabbi Emil W. Leipziger of Touro Synagogue, a former teller and one of the first female officers of the National American Bank of New Orleans. Former member of the Ladies of the Madonna, former president of Garden Sprouts of New Orleans and right-hand helper to her sister Camille at the Gingerbread House Nursery School. A loving and generous soul who made a house a home just by being herself. A native and resident of New Orleans, LA for 84 years; relocated to San Francisco, CA by Hurricane Katrina until April of 2010 when she returned to reside in Metairie at Sunrise Assisted Living. The family would like to thank the caregivers and staff of Alma Via of San Francisco who welcomed her into their community in 2005 with open arms as well as her caregivers at Sunrise of Metairie who shared her return to the New Orleans area and especially those who made her final days as comfortable and peaceful as they were. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., on Monday, August 29, 2011, at 11:00 AM. Visitation from 9:00 AM until time of Mass and also on Sunday, August 28, 2011, from 5:00 PM-8:00 PM at Greenwood Funeral Home. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Michael Special School, 1522 Chippewa Street, New Orleans, LA 70130.
