Mrs. Mamie Lou Edwards Patterson peacefully transitioned July 02, 2012 from earth to heaven. She was born October 15, 1922 to James and Annie Anderson Edwards in Choctaw County, French Camp, Mississippi. She was the fifth of ten children. Both of her parents, four sisters (Nannie Ree Gordon-Baskin, Annie Mae McChristian, Pauline Dotson and Jessie Moran Massey) and three brothers (Elihue Edwards, James Edwards, Jr., and George William Edwards Sr.) preceded her in death.
Reared in a Christian family, she was baptized at an early age and joined the Mt. Salem Methodist Church in French Camp. She was an active church member, participating in youth conferences and revival meetings. She remained faithful in her commitment to the Lord throughout her life. For many years, she served as a Methodist Youth Fellowship Counselor and taught vacation bible school under the leadership of Rev. B.F. Harper at Wesley United Methodist Church, Kosciusko MS. She also served on the stewardess board for a number of years, under various pastors.
Mrs. Patterson received her early education through the Choctaw County School System. She had a thirst for knowledge and excelled academically. She also enjoyed sports and was good basketball player. She continued her educational endeavors through summer programs at Jackson State University.
She met her future husband, the later William Howard Taft Patterson at the Attala County Fair. They were married on May 10, 1941. Their marriage lasted for 53 years until his death and to their union, six children were born; James, Alice, Ruth, Paulette, Travis and Lathan. Two of whom, James William Patterson Sr. and Alice Camille Patterson Bayne) and one great-great grandchild, Christopher Dontae' Herron, preceded in death.
Mrs. Patterson was employed by the Kosciusko Public School System as a cafeteria manager. She worked there for eighteen years. She was a very good cook; former student still remember those tasty meals and her concern for nutritional needs. Her hobbies included cooking, creating recipes, gardening, quilting and sewing.
She is survived by her four children, Ruth Higgins (Rev. William). Surprise AZ; Paulette Towers (Dolphus), Horn Lake, Ms; Travis Patterson (Rosie) and Lathen Patterson (Carolyn) both of Kosciusko MS, one daughter-in-law, Bobbie Patterson, Milwaukee WI; two sisters, Helena Lester, Charlotte, NC, Genell Winters (William), Chicago, IL ; one sister-in-law, Willena Patterson, Hernando, MS; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends
