Birth: Aug. 19, 1895
Death: Dec. 18, 1972

From Tales & Trails of Bailey County, the First 70 Years, Taylor Publishing Co, Dallas, TX 1988

Lewis was born in Gleneaston, West Virginia in 1887, and Laura was born in Missouri in 1897. Both moved to Oklahoma at a very early age where their parents homesteaded. They were married Sept. 23, 1916 in Minco, Oklahoma. They moved to Bailey County in 1925 settling on part of the farm owned by Bill Keisler, seven miles northwest of Muleshoe, living there a number of years where my sister Mayme Cole Dempster and I were born. We moved to Arkansas in 1939. That move proved to be a disaster. We returned to Bailey County in 1942, settling on a small farm which was part of the Hub Motherall land north of Muleshoe. Mother and Dad lived there until their deaths. Dad died in 1947 and mother in 1972.
I didn't spend much time in Bailey County after returning from overseas after the Korean War. I married Janice Lawhon, daughter of Ray and Mae Lawhon, of the Lazbuddie community. Shortly thereafter, I went to work for a major food company headquartered in Dallas. Although we lived in various cities throughout Texas and New Mexico, we always returned to Muleshoe for the birth of our three children. As far as we were concerned there was only one doctor in the worldóL. T. Green.
My last transfer with the company came in 1976. We moved to Farmington, New Mexico, where I retired in 1980. We like the area and we're only thirty minutes from the Colorado mountains, so we have decided to make this our home. Our children are married with families of their own and we are so fortunate to have them all in this area. Our daughter Terri and her husband, Dwayne Owen, are both teachers in the Farmington schools. Gary, our oldest son is associated with a major western wear company in the southwest. Our youngest son, Lewis is with a major oil company in the Four Corners area. We sure enjoy our red-headed granddaughter, Tasha, who enjoys coming to the farm.
We live on a small farm in the Laplata Valley where we operate a private boarding kennel. Although this is home now, we have many fond memories of our loved ones and good friends in Muleshoe, Bailey County, and surrounding areas. May God Bless you all. (Story submitted by Jim Cole)
