Helen C. Leigh 99, Rapid City, died Wed., Oct. 10 at Westhills Village Health Care Facility.
Helen was born to John & Egla Edman on June 17, 1913. The family lived at lumber camps in Clam & Balsam Lake, WI. Later they moved to care for the aged at Polk County Home and eventually moved to Amery, WI.
At 16, Helen left home to train at St. Joseph's Hospital & attended the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota where she earned a five year nursing degree. After graduation, Helen met & married Dallas Higbee Leigh on May 29, 1937. Their first married years were spent in Fairmont, MN where their son, Jon, was born. During WW II Dallas worked for Northwest Airlines on ice research in Dayton, OH.
After the war, the family moved to California where Dallas worked for Food & Machinery in San Jose and Helen began her career in Public Health. She was the Campbell School District's Nurse Supervisor until her retirement.
Helen was a strong advocate for special needs students and pioneered many special services for the blind and deaf. She supervised district-wide programs for vision and dental screening of all students and coordinated childhood immunizations.
After her retirement, Helen & Dallas moved to RC. They enjoyed traveling abroad as well as throughout the US in their motor home. Helen enjoyed many crafts: sewing, woodcarving, china painting, rosemaling, working with stained glass and photography.
She was an accomplished baker & homemade bread was her specialty. She was a seeker of knowledge and a constant reader.
Helen was independent, active and involved. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and in her 90's did on-line counseling for Chrystal Cathedral.
Survivors include: one son, Jon Leigh (Candice), RC, two grandsons, Jon Emil Leigh (Carin) of Tucson, AZ & Joe Leigh of San Dimas CA, a great-granddaughter, and a dear & steadfast friend, RaVae Luckhart of RC.
