PHYLLIS LAVERNE EDGAR BAIRD

Born on November 20, 1922, in Sanger, California.

She lived her entire life in Sanger until moving to Bethel Lutheran Home in Selma.

Her parents were Clarence and Alta Edgar.

Her grandparents were early Sanger pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Edgar and Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Cain.

Phyllis attended Sanger schools where she was involved in the marching band, orchestra and advanced piano classes.

She was a life member of the California Scholarship Federation and graduated third in her Class of 1940.

Phyllis continued her education at Fresno State College where she was active in the Education and Music departments.

She was state President of the California Student Teachers Assn., Secretary of the Junior Class, President of the Pianoforte club, a member of the Freshmen Woman's club, and was a life member of Tokalon.

Phyllis performed in the advanced Piano class, played in the Symphony Orchestra, and was accompanist for the Women's Chorus.

Phyllis was listed in the 1943-1944 Edition of Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges, and graduated with honors in 1944.

In January 1945, after a five and a half year courtship, Phyllis married her high school sweetheart, Navy Lt.Jg. Robert R. Baird Jr. who was home on leave from serving in the Pacific War Zone.

Phyllis and Robert moved to the east coast where Robert was stationed until the end of WWII. Shortly after V-J Day, they returned to Sanger and established their first home.

Both were associated with Phyllis' father in his furniture business, and became sole owners of Edgar Furniture Co. in 1954, until their retirement in 1984.

Phyllis shared willingly with her church, community and her many friends.

She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church, she served as Pianist, Organist, and choir member for more than 50 years.

She was chosen Sanger's Mother of the Year in 1994.

A daughter that did not survive birth preceded Phyllis in death.

Phyllis is survived by Lt. Jg. Robert R. Bob Baird, her husband of 63 years; sister, Shirley Daugherty; daughter, Nancy dela Concepcion and her husband Rod; son, Roger and his wife Carole; son, Scott and his wife Abeth; grandchildren, Sebastian dela Concepcion, Elizabeth Hingano, David dela Concepcion, Kevin Baird, Eric Baird, Warren Taylor, Carmen Qualls, and Christopher Baird; and two great-grandchildren, Cordell and Zackary Qualls.
