Son of Caleb and Margaret (Dunlap) Earp

Caleb Asbury Earp, a millwright, and his wife Frances McKee Earp came from South Carolina to Marion County, Texas in 1840. They traveled on a steamboat up the Mississippi and Red Rivers, their intended destination being old Smithland, which was the main river port before Jefferson was founded. His wife became ill with typhus, a contagious disease, near the end of the trip up the bayou, and the two together with a small baby boy only a few months old were put off the boat near where Jefferson is now located.

Caleb built a brush arbor for shelter and nursed his wife back to health. he then built a log cabin near where the Marion County courthouse is now located. This is supposed to have been the first home built in Jefferson. Later, the couple moved to Red Hill near Douglassville in Cass County, then into Douglassville where he was appointed postmaster and served for three years (1867-1870).

Upon the death of his wife Frances, Caleb moved to Grayson County, Texas where he died.

Caleb is second cousin to Wyatt Earp, the famous frontier Marshal.
