Jonathan D. Earp enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 15. He mustered on 7 Dec 1863 into Co. G, 12th Illinois Cavalry, Illinois under Lieutenant Hubbs.

Private Earp perished in the sinking of the SS North America off Cape Hatteras, Virginia. His body was lost at sea.
