Birth: 1856
Death: 1935

Mrs. John M. Carroll

Alice Jane Dyer, daughter of Wm. G. and Polly Ann Dyer. Was born near Troy, Indiana on December 29, 1856 and departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. C. Nicklin in Selma, Iowa December 28 1935, at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 29 days.

She came to Iowa with her parents when but five years of age. The family settled near the Van Buren-Davis county line in which neighborhood she spent her entire life.

In her early girlhood while attending protracted meetings being conducted by Rev. S. S. Stewart, at what was known as the Rosser school house near her home, she was converted and later united with the White Elm Free Methodist church. To her, life on earth was only a preparation for a greater life in the beyond, and her entire life was lived according to this principle.

She attended the rural schools, the Memphis Normal, the Birmingham Academy, and later taught in the public schools of Van Buren county.

On March 4, 1880 she was united in marriage to John M. Carroll, of Davis county. Their first home was established in what was then known as Portland, now Leando. Later they moved across the river to Douds. In the spring of 1882 the home was re-established on the old Carroll homestead, four miles southwest of Selma, in which neighborhood she and her husband continued to live until the time of his death April 8, 1922. Three years later she left her old home to make a new home with her daughter, Mrs. D. C. Nicklin and husband, of Selma.

She was the mother of five children, all of whom are now living. In the order of their ages they are: H. B. Carroll of Keosauqua; Mrs. D. C. Nicklin of Selma; W. K. Carroll of Ottumwa; Mrs. Ira Lasley of Selma; and C. C. Carroll of Selma. She also leaves nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the White Elm church Monday, Dec. 30th at 11 o’clock, directed by Rev. H. N. Dickson of Ottumwa, assisted by Rev. Bruce Myers of Eldon. Burial was in the Troy cemetery.
