Autumn Durst Keltner

Autumn Durst Keltner was a tireless professional working on behalf of all Adult ESL students. She was an intelligent woman who had many titles, awards and publications, but what is more significant is the example she has set over the years as a dedicated teacher and educator.

She had a life-long passion to improve the delivery of adult education in California and the U.S. According to her colleagues, there is no area of Adult ESL instruction that she has not made better by her involvement. In 1943, Autumn graduated from Pt. Loma High School. In 1946, she married Russell Keltner at the Pt. Loma Presbyterian Church and they settled in Pt. Loma for the remainder of their lives.

She was an amazing woman, a great wife, mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother and friend who is truly missed. She loved sports. She grew up watching her father play professional baseball with teams like the 1927 Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Autumn also spent many a day keeping score at the old "Lane Field" at the foot of Broadway when her father Cedric Durst was manager of the Padres in the 1930's and 1940's.

She went to his games and developed a true love for baseball, so much so that she wanted to become a sports writer. Sports writing including her love for baseball and for writing. However, she grew up during an era where this opportunity was not allotted to women. She looked forward to Padres season. She had season tickets with her husband and children every year, even traveling to Spring Training. Her love for baseball grew into appreciating other sports as well. She attended most San Diego sporting events, including San Diego State games, she was class of 1947.

She thoroughly enjoyed going to all of her children's and grandchildren's games, rooting them on and rarely missing one. She is survived by her two children, Russell and Cindy, three grandchildren, Russell (Kristen), Ryan, and Lynnae (Greg), and her great-grandson, Austin.

Memorial Service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, November 19th, in the Chapel of the Pt. Loma Presbyterian Church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., San Diego, CA 92107.

In lieu of flowers, there is an SDCC-San Diego Community College Scholarship Fund pending in her name.
