RINCON - Long after John Durden retired from Bell South after nearly four decades, he continued to serve his community in a number of voluntary capacities. John Leon Durden Jr., 83, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. Durden was a current member of the Board of Directors for the Effingham County Division of Family and Children's Services. He had served on the board since 1987. He also was a past member of the Effingham Hospital Board of Directors, serving from September 1987 to February 1993. "He served our hospital for a number of years," hospital administrator Norma Jean Morgan said. "When we were looking to expand our operations, he was one of the board members who encouraged us to expand in Rincon." Durden, along with fellow board member Ed Helmey, encouraged the site selection of the former UrgentCare facility at Ga. 21 and Goshen Road at the time when there was no development in the area, Morgan said. That facility is now a MedCare primary care facility. "He was very extremely instrumental in helping us get that facility started," she said. "He had vision of commercial growth in that area. He was a very kind gentleman and very supportive of positive growth." The Bulloch County native was a member of First Baptist Church of Rincon. He was a member of Rincon Lions Club and had been awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Humanitarian Award from the Lions Club International Foundation. He also was a member of American Legion Post 209. He worked 38 years with Bell South and was a member of the Communication Workers of America. He was an Army veteran of War II. "He was trained as a medic in the Army but because he had worked in telephone operations in high school, he was placed in the outfit that worked with the largest communications system in England during the war," Mr. Durden's son, John D. Durden said. "He always said he was blessed with that ability and that he didn't have to go inland during the war." Mr. Durden was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Durden Sr. and Lucile B. Durden; and his brothers, William C. Durden Sr., Robert H. Durden and Donald Durden. Survivors include his wife, Lorine B. Durden of Rincon; children, Linda D. Owens (Drew) of Pooler, John D. Durden (Nancy) of Lawrenceville and Richard L. Durden (Susan) of Rincon; six grandchildren, Christopher John Owens of Savannah, Jennifer Lynn Nesbitt (James) of Atlanta, Catherine Renee Atcheson (Derrick) of Woodstock and Jonathan Richard Durden, Matthew Leon Durden and Emily Susan Durden, all of Rincon; two sisters, Margie D. Brinson of Gainesville, Fla., and Sara D. Jimmerson of Griffin; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, Effingham Chapel. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Rincon. Interment will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens in Statesboro. Remembrances may be sent to First Baptist Church of Rincon, 201 E. 6th Street, Rincon, GA 31326; or Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation, 1775 Clairmont Road, Decatur, GA 30033-4005.
