Piedad Duran was always proud of her heritage, being a direct descendant of one of the founding families of Albuquerque. She was a hard working mother, raising 12 children, all of whom acheived success in their fields. She was a very devout woman, attending the Catholic Church at San Felipe de Neri in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico regularly. She was fond of church bingo and was known to be very lucky at this venture.

According to her son, Alfred Chavez, she "never forgave him (her husband, David Sanchez Chaves) for the twelve children. She was miserably happy. She was always "dying"."

Piedad Duran's funeral was held at San Felipe de Neri Church in Old Town, Albuquerque, New Mexico with her family participating. Father Thomas Wilkinson was the Celebrant for the funeral. She was buried at Mt. Calvary Cemetery (Santa Barbara Cemetery) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She lived to the age of 93 years old. She was a life long resident of Albuquerque and a descendent of one of the first families in old Albuquerque in 1706.

In later life she was known to sing opera.

She attended sister Blandina School and St. Vincents Academy, and was a member of the Andres Cristianas, The Altar Sodality and the Liga del Sagrado Corazon. She was preceded in death by her husband David Sanchez Chavez and survived by six of her sons and three of her daughters.

She always had bizcochitos and and Christmas candy. Piedad was a cigarette smoker and kept a bottle of brandy in the upper cabinet of the kitchen.
