Evelyn Mae Ivey Dupre, 96, of Waco and Mount Calm, went peacefully to the waiting arms of Jesus on March 17, 2009, after a short illness. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, March 20, at Connally/Compton Funeral Directors Chapel with Dr. Art Torpy officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the funeral home.

Evelyn Mae was born in Riesel, Texas, to the late Edwin W. and Parle Jenkins Ivey, the third of eight children. Evelyn spent most of her childhood on farms in the Riesel and Walnut Springs area. After losing her mother at the age of six, Evelyn and her sisters, Jewel and Dorothy, took on the farm chores and caring for little Margret. She would tell stories of how she picked cotton, was chased by the neighbor's bull, and playing church while she preached to her sisters using the family donkey to stand on. Grandpa took the girls to church every week and they would sing for the congregation. Grandpa met and married Emma Lathern. She lovingly raised the girls. The family grew with Sonny, Ruby and little Vernell. Evelyn married Chesley Stevens and gave birth to her pride and joy, Pearlie Inez and Billy Wayne. She later met and married Lonnie Dupre. Evelyn worked many years for J.M. Woods Mfg. and was in the building on the day of the Waco Tornado. She and some of her co-workers hid under cutting tables during the storm. Upon retiring, she worked for Little Sunbeam Day Care, where she found her calling, taking care of newborns. One of her first babies came to her just a few weeks old. He was little Eric that she loved until she left us. In 1980, she started caring for babies in her home on Reuter. To all of them she was Nanny. Many of her babies are now lawyers, business professionals, police officers, and doctors, only a few are now in college. In 2002, Nanny let her last little bird, Jessica, leave her loving nest. After a short illness, Nanny stopped caring for babies, but took on the job of caring for her great-great-grandchildren. She was always there for anyone. They would also go each Sunday after church to visit the handicapped children at the old Providence Hospital.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Lonnie Dupre; daughter, Pearl Williams; son, Billy Wayne Stevens; great-granddaughter, Stephanie Graham; and great-great-grandson, William Jonathan Graham; brother, James Darvin Ivey; and sisters, Jewel Coker, Dorothy Lummus, Margret Redding and Ruby Walker.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Billie and John Graham, of Mount Calm, Steve and Pat Schwarz, of Hewitt, Bobbie and Rick Griggs, of Gholson, Wendy and Fred Lenz, of Deer Park, Texas, and Loree Dodd, of Pasadena, Texas; great-grandchildren, Pearlie, Sarah, and Steven "S.J." Graham, of Mount Calm, Michael Graham, of Quinlan, Texas, Steven Robert and Katie Schwarz, of Ft. Worth, Michael Wayne and Jill McCullough, Emily and Ian, of Hewitt, Justin McCullough, of Waco, Beau McCullough, Derek Dodd, of Clear Lake, Texas, and Chad and Colt Dodd, of Deer Park, Texas; sister, Vernell Trevillion, of Pearland, Texas; and many other family members and friends.
