World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award from British King George V at Buckingham Palace on December 7, 1915, for his actions as a private with the 13th Battalion, The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment), British Army, on September 26, 1915, at the Battle of Loos, France. After joining the British Army, his unit was sent to the Western Front in France in July 1915 and 5 months later he displayed courage and valor at the Battle of Loos, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was later promoted to the rank of corporal and was killed in action near Mazingarbe, France, at the age of 24. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For most conspicuous bravery on Hill 70 on 26th Sept., 1915. Pte. Dunsire went out under very heavy fire and rescued a wounded man from between the firing lines. Later, when another man considerably nearer the German lines was heard shouting for help, he crawled out again with utter disregard to the enemy's fire and carried him in also. Shortly afterwards the Germans attacked over this ground." His Victoria Cross is on display at the Royal Scots Museum in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland.
