*VICTIM OF THE 1857 MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE*
Lorenzo Dow Dunlap was the third son of Jesse Dunlap, Sr. and his first wife Mary Williams, born 21 February 1815 in Stokes County, North Carolina. He married Nancy Jane Wharton, the daughter of Joshua B. Wharton and Elizabeth Ann Cooke, in Madison County, Arkansas. They resided briefly in Madison County, before moving to Johnson County, and then Marion County, Arkansas.
With his younger brother, Jesse Dunlap, Jr. and his family, Lorenzo Dow Dunlap, his wife, and eight children, comprised "The Dunlap Train" that departed from Marion County, Arkansas in April of 1857 in conjunction with "The Mitchell Train". Lorenzo's brother Jesse Dunlap, Jr. was married to Mary M. Wharton, who was the sister of Lorenzo's wife Nancy Jane Wharton.
Lorenzo and Jesse Dunlap, Jr. were the maternal uncles of Charles Roark Mitchell and Joel Dyer Mitchell, whose families comprised "The Mitchell Train" from Marion County, Arkansas. Lorenzo and Jesse, Jr.'s sister, Nancy Isabella Dunlap, was married to William C. Mitchell, who was the father of the two Mitchell brothers. William C. Mitchell, a former Arkansas State Senator, would later give a deposition that stated that Lorenzo Dunlap had 4 yoke of oxen, 1 wagon with log chains and wagon sheet, 3 guns, pistols, and knives, provisions, cooking articles, tents, and bedding, along with 12 head of cattle, when he started for California.
Lorenzo Dow Dunlap, his wife Nancy Jane (Wharton) Dunlap, and 6 of their 8 children (John H. Dunlap, Mary Ann Dunlap, Talitha Emeline Dunlap, Nancy Dunlap, and America Jane Dunlap) died in the Mountain Meadows Massacre. His two youngest children, Prudence Angeline Dunlap, born 9 January 1852 and Georgeann Dunlap, born 1 February 1857, survived the Massacre. In 1859 the two Dunlap girls were returned to their paternal aunt Nancy Isabella (Dunlap), the wife of William C. Mitchell, in Marion County, Arkansas. Lorenzo Dow Dunlap was 42 years old when he died.
