Orville Dunham Accidentally Shot Thru Lung
Lad of 16 Dies Three Hours After Shooting Before Medical Aid
Orville Dunham, aged about 16, son of O. H. Dunham, a prominent rancher on, about 25 miles southwest of Pinedale, was accidentally shot thru the left lung this morning about nine o'clock, dying at 12 noon from the effects of the gun shot wound. As near as we have been able to learn at this time, the two boys, Orville and Bert aged 16 and 18 respectively, were at home alone during the absences of Mr. and Mrs. Dunham at the road on business.
Orville was outside of the house at the time, while Bert was inside the house and had taken the gun down from the wall to clean and in some unaccountable, unexplainable manner the hammer was pulled back and on laying the gun down on the bed was discharged, the ball from a 30 caliber rifle passing upward and out thru the window striking Orville in the left lung, who it appears was just at that moment passing the window outside, inflicting a wound from which the young man passed away at noon.
Bert immediately called for Dr. Schrader of Piney and Montrose of Daniels [sic] to come to attend his brother, summoned a sister, Mrs. Gilbert Hayden, who lives at the Chas. Ball ranch, and Frank Ball, whose ranch adjoins the Dunham place. A call was put in for the father and mother at Opal and Kemmerer. The parents were finally located at the Chas. Bird place at Midway and hurried homeward as fast as relay teams could cover the distance of about thirty miles to the bedside of the injured boy.
However, death had interviened [sic] long before the parents arrived and removed the sufferer from this earthly habitation. Dr. Schrader arrived some after the boy had passed away. A sister, Miss Alma, who was teaching at Stanley was also called.
The home coming of Mr. and Mrs. Dunham is indeed a sad one and they have the sympathy of all in their hour of sorrow.—Pinedale Roundup.
