Excerpted from the Rossland Miner of August 20, 1910 (P1C3&4):
CHARLIE DUNDEE’S SUDDEN DEATH
DIES ON C.P.R. TRAIN.
Pathetic circumstance attended the death of Charlie Dundee, whose dead body was taken out of the toilet of the car on the arrival of Tuesday night’s C.P.R. train.
Early in the evening W. H. Gage, of the Castlegar hotel, had telephoned to Dr. Kenning, of Rossland, to meet the train, as Dundee was in pretty bad shape…a rig was there to meet the train, and when Dundee did not appear Robert Morrow, the driver, searched the train. The door of the toilet was fastened from the inside, and an alarm was raised. Officer Stewart…entered by the toilet window and found Dundee dead…Under such circumstances, the Coroner considered it necessary to hold an inquest…A verdict of “Death by Heart Failure” was returned.
Charlie Dundee was 58 years of age at the time of his sudden demise. He came of a good family living in Belfast, Ireland, and was the last of three brothers. It was 25 years ago that he came to Canada…He was well known, at one time, as the owner of the famous and valuable property, the Dundee mine, in the Ymir district…He had an expert knowledge of mining, and he had many stories to tell of the early days. He leaves a wife and three young children.
The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon. The Rev. W. P. Ewing conducted the service at the house and at the graveside. The relatives were the chief mourners.
