Archie Harwood Duncan, 81, Cannon Falls, died peacefully, holding hands with his family, on Tuesday, March 15, after a month to the day at the Zumbrota Care Center.
Archie was born in Leon Township and was one of six children born to Leona (Lindell) and Gifford Duncan. Archie received his education at the Cannon Falls schools. He was inducted into the U.S. Army on Aug. 28, 1951, served in Korea with the 341st Army Corps of Engineers, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 12, 1953. Medals he received: Korean Service with two Bronze Stars, United Nations and National Defense Service.
Archie married Marie A. Johnson on March 16, 1958, at the Spring Garden Lutheran Church, Leon Township. They purchased his grandparents' farm in 1966. It is a Century Farm.
Archie was a member of VFW Post #4452, IH Collectors of Minnesota Chapter #15, and Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation.
Archie hauled milk to the Vasa Creamery, owned an air conditioning and refrigeration business, was employed by Althoff's Hardware, Cannon Falls, and maintained the Cannon Falls Township roads for 20 years. In addition, Archie was a crop farmer and raised Black Angus and Herefords.
Archie enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, dancing, Pioneer Power shows, auctions, woodworking, carpentry, repairing and restoring tractors and farm machinery, creating and cooking his own recipes, baking bread, country and polka music, picnics, reminiscing, reading, whistling, holidays, drives, and time with his family. Archie was inquisitive and fascinated by old and new technology, was a photography and threshing enthusiast, and could talk about Moguls and Titans for hours. He would also tell his family to listen closely; the Mogul 30-60 sounds like "Duncan, Duncan, Duncan."
Archie didn't call for repair work; he figured it out himself. He would be heard saying, "We'll give it a try."
Archie had a kind heart and was thoughtful, patriotic, law-abiding, and such an awesome person. We miss him so much!
Archie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marie; his daughters, Deanna Duncan-Parduhn of Burnsville, Nicole (Tim) Bergeson of Cannon Falls; grandchildren, Justin Bergeson (Katie Bebee) of Owatonna, Britney Bergeson of Cannon Falls; siblings Norma Taylor of Cannon Falls, Marcelyn (Joe) Jacobson of Nerstrand, Lois (Tim) Stenerson of Red Wing, Clair Duncan of Red Wing; godchildren, Karen Lundell of Rosemount and Cynthia Jacobson of Eden Prairie; nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends; and pet Beagle, Betsy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gifford and Leona; his brother Harlan; sister-in-law Dixie; and brother-in-law Robert Taylor.
Service and burial were held on Friday, March 18, at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery with Dr. Randy K. Taber, Pastor, officiating, and soloist Tim Dahl. Time with family and friends was at the Officer's Club, Fort Snelling.
Memorials are preferred to Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation.
