Helen M Duggins Brake, "HB," was born August 28, 1922, and entered eternal life on August 16, 2013. She was born in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Otis C and Cora (Knox) Duggins, but spent her years growing up in Springfield, Missouri. She attended Roundtree Elementary, Jarrett Jr High, and Springfield High School (later Central HS), graduating in the class of 1940. She attended Grace Methodist Church and High Street Baptist Church, and enjoyed an association with Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Helen married William R "Mutt" Brake on March 30, 1952, and they enjoyed 47 years before his passing in 1999. They had two daughters, Cindy Carroll (Ron) and Debbi Miller, who were the lights of their lives. They lived the motto "family first" and she will be missed by her grandchildren, Stephanie Niewald Jump (Lance), Janeen Miller Rheinecker, Trey Miller (Tara Hamilton), and Ky Miller; her great-grandchildren Jadeyn and Jolee Rheinecker and Ryker Thomas Jump. Also mourning her passing are her special Friday Night Domino friends.
During her growing up years, Helen's family was involved in the restaurant and motel business. As a teenager Helen worked as a carhop at Dugg's Place (their family business). She attended Draughon's Business College and worked in offices at the Prosecutor's Office and at City Utilities. In high school she was a member of Theta Tau Theta and as an adult was a 66-year member of Beta Sigma Phi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mutt, her parents, a brother, John K Duggins, and an infant sister, Catherine May. Other survivors include nieces Joan Gasaway (Max), April Brake (Punky Fedora), nephew John Robert Duggins (Nancy), sister-in-law Shirley Brake, several great-nieces and nephews, and her "guard kitty" Sophi.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Richard Cunningham for his care through the years, as well as the staff and residents of The Waterford at Ironbridge (where she enjoyed living, making friends, and playing bingo for the last 5 years), Rita, Francie, and the staff at Phoenix Home Care, the staff at Hospice Compassus, and her great-niece Sherri Cervantes for her saintly assistance in Helen's final days.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 18 from 4-6 pm at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 19 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Interment will follow at EastLawn Cemetery.
