Bonnie M. Duer, age 90, passed away on September 9, 2015 in Durham, NC.

She was born in Springville, IA to Dean and Ida Hampton.

Bonnie married Claire D. Duer in Cedar Rapids after Mr. Duer returned from WW11. They were married for more than 45 years.

Bonnie graduated from the University of Iowa, School of Nursing, with a BS RN degree in 1946. Bonnie and Claire left IA in 1950 to settle in Minneapolis, MN.

In Clarion, the Duer family was the owner and operator of Duer & Son Grocery store which is now Chappy’s on Main.

For more than 20 years, Bonnie lived, worked as a nurse and raised a family in Minneapolis, MN. Bonnie was a long time member of Plymouth Congregational Church.

After moving to Arlington Heights, IL in 1970, Bonnie worked as a nurse at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

Upon her retirement, Bonnie was active as a nurse volunteer for NW Community Hospital in a clinic. In Arlington Heights, IL, Bonnie was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Bonnie was a resident of Luther Village Retirement Community in Arlington Heights for 5 years before she moved to Durham, NC to be closer to her daughter.

Bonnie was a devoted parent, grandparent and great grandparent who provided much for the benefit of her children and grandchildren. Bonnie imparted a love of home, family, learning and travel to her children and grandchildren. Bonnie’s nursing skills were always in service whenever her family and others were in need. The family lovingly reciprocated that service to Bonnie at the end of her life. Bonnie will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, generosity, warm smile and gentle laughter. She will be missed by all who loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claire D. Duer of Arlington Heights, IL (originally, Clarion IA) and a brother, Robert G. Hampton of Robbins, IA.

Bonnie Duer is survived by her children: daughter, Ann Duer Berger and husband James of Durham NC; son, Michael Duer and wife Nelda of Fairfield, OH – adult grandchildren: Jill Berger Hallstein and husband Sascha of Saratoga, CA; Julie Gish and husband Ryan of Lake Forest, IL – and four great grandchildren.

Burial of Bonnie’s cremated remains and a celebration of her life will take place in Clarion, IA at Evergreen Cemetery on Saturday, May 7, at 4 p.m.

A reception with friends and family will immediately follow at the community room at the Boulders Hotel in Clarion, IA. All are welcome.
