Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He enlisted in the United States Army on December 8, 1846, to fight in the Mexican War, and was mustered in as a Private in the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteers. Two months later in February 1847 he was commissioned as as 2nd Lieutenant in the 9th United States Regular Infantry. He was engaged at the March 1847 Siege of Vera Cruz, and in the march to Mexico City that ended the war. In March 1848 he was transferred to the 4th United States Regular artillery. In September 1855 he was serving as an aide to Brigadier General William S. Harney when United States forces attacked a Sioux Indiana settlement at Ash Hollow, Nebraska, and fought an hours long battle that resulted in 86 Sioux casualties, half of which were women and children (other Army officers who were present at the fight were future Civil War generals Henry Heth, Gouverneur K. Warren, Philip S. Cooke, William S. Steele, Albemarle Cady and Beverly Robertson). In 1856 he was appointed as acting Assistant Adjutant General at the headquarters of the Army Department of the West. At the beginning of the Civil War, he was appointed Assistant Adjutant General of the United States Army's Department of the Pacific. He waa promoted Captain on May 14, 1861, Major on August 3, 1861 and Lieutenant Colonel on July 17, 1862. He was brevetted Brigadier General, United States Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services in the Adjutant General's Department during the war". He continued service in the Army after the war, rising to Brigadier General in 18880. He served as Adjutant General of the Army until his retirement on May 28, 1889.
