Obituary in The State, Columbia, SC, 22 Jul 2010: Virginia Beach, VA - Mary Alice Dreher Amburn died at Virginia Beach General Hospital on Monday, July 19, 2010. She was born in West Columbia, S.C., on October 18, 1921, daughter of the late Ryan W. Dreher and Nannie Willingham Dreher. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Edward Riley Amburn; her daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Amburn; and brothers, Walter Clark Dreher and Thomas Henry Dreher. She is survived by her son, Edward Ryan Amburn of Hickory, N.C.; her daughter, Chicora Ellen 'Pinky' Hipp and son-in-law, Edward R. Hipp, III of Smithfield, Va.; her special-needs daughter, Celinda Jon Amburn of Southside Training Center, Petersburg, Va.; her sister, Ann Dreher Bowman of Charlotte, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Mary Alice was a graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School and Draughons Business College. Before moving to The Arbors, she and her husband resided in Linlier for 41 years where she was a charter member of The Linlier Garden Club. She was also a member of The Francis Land Chapter of The Daughters of American Revolution, The Cavalier Ladies Golf Association, and Red Wing Women's Golf Association. She was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she served on the Altar Guild, Church Council, and Women of the Church and she taught Sunday School. She began her volunteer work at Virginia Beach General Hospital in February 1968 as a Red Cross nurse's aide. In 1974 she was employed as the first director of volunteer services until retirement in 1984. Until recently she was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and an active volunteer having given thousands of hours of service. Funeral services will be conducted at Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, West Columbia, S.C., on Friday, July 23, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A memorial service will be held on August 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Virginia Beach, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1489 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23451 or Mt. Hermon Lutheran Church, 3011 Leaphart Road, West Columbia, SC 29169. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
