Joseph Drews was born in Poland. He married Anna Koźmińska in 1886 in Podlesie Kościelne, Poland. The couple had two children, Martin and Jadwiga (aka Hattie Grabowski), before immigrating to Michigan circa 1889.
The surname "Drews" in Polish is pronounced with a 'v' or 'f' sound, hence the surname was changed to "Dreffs" upon immigration to America.
