Born Edla Charlotta Kristina Peterson in Bökebacken, Växjö, Kronoberg, Sweden. Daughter of Peter Johan Peterson and Karolina Andersdotter. She was the next-to-youngest of thirteen children, of whom ten survived. Her mother died of a brain tumor when the youngest child was ten months old. Edla was three.

Married first, Fredrick Pratt Hawkes on 5 August 1925 in Logan, UT (divorced); one daughter, Phyllis Ann, who was adopted later by her stepfather. Married second, Otto Ludwig Draper on 9 November 1931 in Salt Lake City, UT; two sons, Otto Ludwig, Jr., and Raymond Peter.

She was the grandmother of author and life coach Martha Beck.
