He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.
LCpl Drane was killed as a result of small arms fire in the Nad e-Ali area of central Helmand province. He was shot while carrying out security duties at Check Point Paraang where he had been posted for about two months. He was the 100th UK casualty of the Afghan conflict during the year 2009 bringing the overall total to 237 since 2001.
Aged 23, from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He completed infantry training in August 2007 and deployed within two weeks on his first tour of duty in Afghanistan. On returning to the UK he completed a Junior Non-Commissioned Officer cadre and was soon after promoted to Lance Corporal. Respected as an excellent soldier, he was described a popular, kind man with a great sense of humour. He was also a talented boxer, an avid music fan and known for his love of guitars.
LCpl Drane is survived by his fiancée Sian Goodenough, his parents Desmond and Jacqueline, brother Christopher, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral with full military honours was held at St Mary's Church, Honey Hill, Bury St Edmunds on December 23, 2009 followed by private committal service in Stanningfield.
