Melba was a teacher by profession, graduating first from Farmington Normal School, Farmington, ME; then receiving a Bachelor's Degree from Gorham State Teachers College. She began teaching in South Waterford (name in the History of Waterford book) and then in Portland at various schools where she taught first grade. She retired from the Harrison Lyseth School at North Deering in 1973 after teaching for 30 years. Melba loved Long Island and spent much of her lifetime there.
