Verle was a daughter of W.T. and Pernolie (Mitchell) Murphy. She worked many years as a telephone operator for Old Ben Coal Co., retiring in 1963.

She married George Drake who preceded her in death in 1936.

Survivors included three sons, Charles "Chuck" Drake and Walter Drake of West Frankfort, and John Drake of Noblesville, Ind.; one daughter, Shirley Lazzeri of West Frankfort; seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
