Carl J. Drake
Carl J. Drake, Ph.D., 82, of Washington, D.C., native of Seneca county, died at 12:20 p.m. Saturday, Oct., 2, 1965, in the Washington Hospital Center.
A world-recognized entomologist, Dr. Drake had been associated with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington for many years. He had traveled throughout the world in the interest of entomological science, including a trip to Russia earlier this year.
Dr. Drake attended Heidelberg College for two years, was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, and held a master's degree from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. degree from Syracuse University. He taught at Syracuse for four years and then at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, until he retired from active teaching and joined the staff of Smithsonian Institution about 20 years ago.
Born in Seneca county July 28, 1883, Dr. Drake was a son of William L. and Alice (Shippey) Drake. He is survived by a brother Marion O. Drake Sr., 271 East Market street, Tiffin, and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers, Chalmer and Fred and two sisters, Mrs. Vernie Kunkle and Miss Alba Drake.
The body is being brought to Tiffin today and services will be held in the Turner funeral home at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Ronald Sellers, pastor of the Melmore Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Rock Creek cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.
