Death: Dec. 12, 2005

Elizabeth Downs Whitham, age 56, died Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at her home in Woodbridge. Born in upstate New York, she was raised in Scranton and Philadelphia, Pa. She was employed as shipping coordinator for seagoing container cargo when she met her future husband while visiting Camp Lejuene, N.C. In 1972, she married and began a new career as a Marine wife. She was active in many service organizations, and in the later years particularly enjoyed helping ease the transition from civilian to military life for young wives. A resident of Woodbridge since 1983, she was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish where she taught CCD classes for many years. In 1994, she started work as a classroom assistant in the Special Education Department at Woodbridge Senior High School. Although she enjoyed the close and personal work with the students, she felt she could contribute more to the school by the use of her clerical skills. She moved to the office staff where she became the switchboard operator/receptionist/secretary. She was known as the "voice of WSHS" because she was the first person you spoke to when you called or visited the school and is remembered for her pleasant and helpful attitude. She is survived by her husband, Paul Whitham; son and daughter-in-law, Josh and Cecilia Whitham; son, Jeremy Whitham; brothers, Fred of Clifton Park, N.Y., Tom of Philadelphia, Pa., Chris of Baltimore, Md.; her sister, Kathy Downs Laskowski of Wilmington, Del.; eight nieces and three nephews. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Dec. 15, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd, Dale City. Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 16, at 8 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 12805 Valleywood Drive, Lake Ridge, followed by a private burial service for the family at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make donations in Elizabeth's name to Women Against Lung Cancer ( or to the American Diabetes Association.
