PIONEER CALLED HOME
Death of Mrs. Jane Allen — Age 99 Yeas and 8ix Months.
Mrs. Jane Allen, widow of the late Elijah Allen, known to all of our people as Grandma Allen, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George P. Sharp, on Friday, Jan. 26. She has been in feeble health for several months, and a short time ago was paralyzed.
Jane Dowell Allen, daughter of James and Martha Dowell, was born in North Carolina July 17, 1812. Moved to Monroe County, Ind., when 16 years of age. Joined Bethel Church in Feb. 1810, 72 years ago. She was lettered from Bethel church in 1858 and became one of the constituent members of the Ellettsville Baptist Church, and in all of her years of active life was one of its faithful and beloved members. She with her husband attended 30 out of 33 of the Baptist Associations. She was married to Elijah Allen in 1838; to this union was born three children, two sons and one daughter, — James N. Allen, who lives near Stinesville, and is dangerously ill; Thos. W. Allen, deceased, and Martha S. Sharp. The latter, with her husband, until his death last spring, has borne the care of mother for 30 years, the last years being years of constant care.
Grandma Allen leaves eight grand children and sixteen great grand children. Two of the great grand children are married and have homes of their own. Charles D. Freeman married one of the grand daughters and they with their children have lived with the aged grandmother for years and assisted in caring for her, and no doubt profited by her Godly life with the other grand children all of whom are members of church; also the great grand children who have come to the years of account ability. The deceased was 99 years 0 months and 9 days old when she died.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist church at Ellettsville Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock in charge of Rev. D. Hannah. Burial at the Presbyterian cemetery. Six of the great grand children acted as pall bearers.
