Wayne Durwood Dovel, 72, of Elkton, died Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He had been battling cancer for several years.
A son of the late Carl and Lourene Grimsley Dovel, he was born on Feb. 20, 1937, in Rockingham County. He had also made his home in Broadway for 10 years and lived the majority of his life in Shenandoah.
Mr. Dovel graduated from Elkton High School and served in the Air Force. He had worked at Reynolds Metals for 34 years prior to retiring in 1994. He was an outdoorsman and was a hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the Shenandoah VFW, the Eagles at New Market and the Assembly of God Church at Shenandoah.
On May 4, 1960, he married the former Sylvia Marie Lucas, who survives.
Besides his wife, of Shenandoah, he is survived by a companion, Christine Gregorich of Elkton; one daughter, Angie Dovel, and two sons, Dwayne Dovel and Jimmy Dovel, all of Shenandoah; 10 grandchildren; and one brother, Ray Dovel of Elkton.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct 14, at the Assembly of God Church with Pastor Carter Dean officiating. Burial followed in St. Peter's Cemetery.
