Littleton Smith Douthit married Miss Martha West on 24 December 1911 at Olney, Young County, Texas.

In trying to stop a runaway team pulling a go-devil cultivator, Smith Douthit put himself in harms way. He attempted to save the life of the boy driver who was operating the plow. Smith Douthit got his horse in front of the frightened animals and was making an effort to stop them when both he and the horse he was riding were run over by the runaway team. The boy escaped uninjured.

Smith Douthit lived 10 miles south of Plainview and moved to Plainview from Olney in 1921.
