When younger he was engaged in mercantile pursuits in New London and at the time of the Revolution he held a captain's commission. At the close of the war he was appointed jail keeper and inspector of vessels for the port of New London.
He died of yellow fever at New London, contracted while caring for a friend.
His widow subsequently removed to Maine.
He married Abigail Bailey June 3, 1773. His children, all born at New London, were Ebenezer (1774-1778), Abigail, Lucy, Martha (1779-1830; married Alexander C. Wylly), Benjamin (1781-1783), Francis, Mary, Nathan, John Woodworth, Elizabeth, Julia (born 1792; married William Hyde), and Anne.
