Killed at the Battle of Salem Church when confronted by an overwhelming Rebel force. He was shot between the eyes and as he went down was still urging the men on of Company H. It is thought that his body might have burned in the field near Salem Church, as it caught fire. Even though this might have been what happened, his remains would have no doubt been located and taken along with the rest of those of the 121st New York and placed in the common grave in Fredericksburg.

Sgt. Rosell Firman, of Company H. wrote a letter to his father, relating the event of his death. Firman, when he left the battlefield picked up Ulysses's sword, which he promised that he would return to the family. He also had his cap, but in the retreat lost it.

There were 57 members in Company H that night when it went into battle. Only 21 came out unscathed. The rest were either killed, wounded and captured.
